Visit to Texas

Texas, October 2014

Jim and I started our day at 3:00 am arriving at the Spokane Airport at 5:45 for our 6:30 flight to Denver.  We arrived in Denver at 9:35 and had a short layover in Denver leaving on the 1:35 flight to Austin, Texas.  It is about a two hour flight so we arrived in Austin at 4:30.  We rented a car and headed to Dustin and Lexie's apartment.  They took us to Torchy's for tacos and then we went shopping for cots and mattresses so we would have something to sleep on.  We finally settled on two mattresses from Ikea. 

Dustin went to work for a couple of hours on Friday and we picked him up around 10:00 am.  This is a picture of his office building.

We visited the Capital building there in Austin and took the "Rest in Peace" tour.  We learned all about the people who died in the Capital building.

We went to Rudy's for lunch and had the famous "Texas Barbecue".  Then we headed for the "Inner Space Cavern" in Georgetown, Texas. We took the adventure tour which took us about a half mile into the caverns and then we retraced our steps back to the opening.  At one point they turned off the lights and did an experiment to see if we could follow their directions and return to our starting point. I thought of Makayla, we experienced her world for a few minutes.

After the caves we went back to Round Rock and had dinner at La Margarita. It was ok but not the best.  We enjoyed the evening at Dustin and Lexie's apartment.

 Saturday we drove to San Antonio and toured the Alamo.

After walking through the grounds and shrine we headed for the River Walk. We took a boat cruise through all the passages.  It was relaxing and learned a lot about the area and how it has been preserved. We also learned that many Germans settled in this area.  They built a Catholic church so they could have their meetings in German.  Today once a month they hold the Mass in German.

 We found a German Bistro along the River Walk and enjoyed some knackwurst, rye bread and sauerkraut.

The trip to San Antonio is about two hours, we had a great day.  We returned to Round Rock and enjoyed ice cream and a movie in their apartment.
Sunday morning we were up at 4;00 am and out the door at 5:00 headed to the airport.  We made our flight to Denver and then on to Spokane.  We flew Southwest in order to return home in the afternoon.  We arrived in Colville at 3:00. I was exhausted so took a nap for an hour and a half.
